Setting Up Referral Program - Part 1

Setting Up Referral Program Part 1

Reward customers for referring friends. The referrer is your customer who shares their referral link. The friend is the person they invite. The referrer earns points when their friend makes a purchase, and the friend gets a reward on their first order. Part 2 covers the advanced settings.

1. Open Earning Rules

Go to https://merchant.nector.io/ and click Programs in the left sidebar. The Earning Rules page opens.

2. Open the Referral tab

Click the Referral tab at the top of the Earning Rules list.

3. Review the default referral rules

Two rules are already set up:

  • Friend's Reward: what the friend gets, for example a ₹15 off coupon on orders of ₹500 or more.
  • Customer's Reward: the points the referrer earns, for example 100 NEC, up to 5 times a month.

What you can give the friend depends on the referral type you choose in Part 2 (How to Collect Friend's Information):

  • Frictionless Referral: the friend's reward must be a discount coupon. You can't give points.
  • Collect Friend's Email or Collect Friend's Mobile: you can also give the friend points.

Use the Status toggle to turn a rule on or off. Click a rule to change it.

4. Set the referrer's reward

Click Customer's Reward to open the Referrer Reward page. On the Discount Settings tab:

  1. Points To Reward (required): for example 100.
  2. Reward Title (required): the name the customer sees in their wallet history, for example "Referral Reward".
  3. Reward Description (optional): a short note shown in their wallet history.
  4. Expire Points In Days (optional): how many days before these points expire. This overrides your store's default expiry.
  5. Click Save.

The referrer gets these points once their friend completes a purchase. You choose the exact order status in Part 2.

5. Limit how often referrers are rewarded (optional)
On the Advanced Settings tab, under Execution Restriction:

  1. Choose Reward only for certain number of times in a given period.
  2. Reward count: the most rewards per customer, for example 5.
  3. Interval To Reset Reward Count: how often the count resets, for example month.
  4. Click Save.

These limits apply per customer.

6. Notify the referrer (optional)

On the Notification Settings tab, click Create Notification. This opens the Notifications page under Communication. Choose how to notify the customer:

  • Send An Email
  • Send Event To An Integration
  • Send A Webhook

You can skip this for now and set it up later.

7. Open the friend's reward

Back on the Referral tab, click Friend's Reward to open the Referee Reward page. It shows the discount details, for example ₹15 off with a minimum cart of ₹500, usable once per customer. It also shows Redemption Stats (times availed and used), and View Coupons lists the codes generated.

Click Edit Discount Settings → to change the discount.

If you collect the friend's email or mobile and give them points instead of a coupon, this page looks like the referrer's reward in step 4. Set the points the same way, click Save, and skip to step 11.

8. Edit the friend’s discount

On the Discount Settings tab:

  1. Discount Amount (required): for example ₹15. The discount type is fixed and can’t be changed.
  2. Minimum cart amount: for example ₹500.
  3. Allow the discount only on specific products or categories (optional): choose Product or Category, then select up to 100 items.
  4. Keep Status set to Active. The offer isn’t shown to customers directly; it’s only used to generate referral codes.

9. Restrict the discount to new customers (recommended)

On the Advanced Settings tab:

  1. Discount Combinations (optional): tick any to let the referral code combine with other order, product or shipping discounts.
  2. Shopify Segment Id: enter the ID of a Shopify segment of customers with 0 orders, so only new customers can use referral codes. If you don’t have one, click Create Shopify Segment.
  3. Click Save.

If you leave Shopify Segment Id empty, anyone with the referral link can use it, including existing customers. You can save without it, but adding it is recommended.

10. Delete a referral reward (optional)

To remove a reward, open it and click Delete at the top right. This can’t be undone.

11. See the referral program on your store
Open your store and click the rewards widget. The Referral Program section shows:

  • the customer’s unique referral link, with a copy button
  • share buttons for Facebook, WhatsApp and X
  • what the referrer earns, for example “Share with friends to get 100 NEC once their order is fulfilled”

12. Test the customer journey

  1. The customer copies their referral link and shares it with a friend.
  2. The friend clicks the link and lands on your store. A pop-up shows their discount, for example "Claim your ₹15 Off Coupon", with a code to copy and a Shop Now button. If you collect the friend's email or mobile (see Part 2), the friend enters it first.
  3. The friend uses the code on their first order.
  4. When the friend's order reaches the status you choose in Part 2, for example delivered, the referrer receives their points, for example 100 NEC.

Tip: 💡 Tip: referrals convert best when customers share their link directly through messaging apps like WhatsApp.
